LAST WEEKEND IN NEW YORK

It was my one week anniversary on Thursday the 3rd of March since I came back from New York. Friends and family keep asking me "how was it? Tell me everything!" But I can't seem to grasp my memory's from the experiences I had in such an amazing city that now feel like a dream I woke up from when I jumped on that plane at JFK. I specifically didn't take images of the things I most loved to see how long I can hold on to that sweet memory for and test if it was in fact love.

The best time I had was the Sunday before I left which I've been meaning to document since. From what I can grasp of the archived files in my head was waking up to a crisp yet sunny day and cooking breakfast, eggs and spinach from what I recall. I had wanted to visit an organic chocolate store/factory in Williamsburg for a while so I caught the L train to Bedford Avenue and walked to North 3rd Street to where MAST BROTHERS CHOCOLATE is located. Every flavour of chocolate they produced was broken into small bite sized taste testers. Yes, I tried ever flavour on offer. My favourite was Cocoa Nibs which I purchased for my dad for a reasonable price of 7USD.

No structured plans were made for this warm day (one of two days classified as a heatwave for NYC in the middle of winter) so I decided to look around Bedford Avenue in search of the best Bedford coffee. My focus was broken from the site of Spoonbill & Sugartown, a bookseller I recall visiting the week I arrived in New York during August last year. They have an amazing array of design and art books however the only one that caught my attention was The Gift by Lewis Hyde, a book about creativity and the artist in the modern world, I thought perfect as a gift for my step-mother.

Although a gift I had to make sure the content was suited to the receiver so I purchased myself a cup of fresh coconut water and went on a search for a nice area to park myself. What better place then Union Square park?! Enjoying my newly purchased book I was distracted by a four piece band a long with an entourage of photographers with motion and still cameras I witnessed setting up gig in the middle of the park in my peripheral vision. The folk/jazz infused live music began and my attention was dedicated fully to this young group of artists called PEARL AND THE BEARD. Unfortunately after two songs the park security kicked them off the grass so they had to migrate to the concrete which clearly didn't affect their performance as they managed to compel an epic crowd.

It got a bit too crowded and the sun started to set so I though it was now the best time to hit a salsa dance class. The class finished just in time for dinner and there was no other place I'd rather spend my last Sunday night feast in New York City than Wholefoods, the best supermarket on the planet which sadly is not in Australia!

The best thing about this day was that I was alone and had the chance to explore what I wanted and relax fully without distractions.

I feel I have already found and refined my style, but i just wanted someone else's view point on style, hence I read this book...

FIT KNIT AND DRAPE

Knitwear and Drape III Soft Silhouettes assessment for the Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC.

Here is my drape garment, made from three recycled sweaters with my own designed and constructed knitted lining for the three hoods that criss-cross at the front of the piece.

This is the back view of my Knitwear final. It has an origami look to it with folding (instead of cutting) to fit the female form.

Below is my final Drape III garment.

It is a silk chiffon body-suit (very difficult fabric to work with), and a leather piece worn as an accessory over the top to bring the drape in to fit and flatter the female form.

EARLY SEAS

Last week a crew of two make-up artist's, stylist/designer (me), photographer (Alexandra Leigh Frumberg), and model met up at 5am in New York City's financial district for an early friday photo shoot.

Beginning to shoot at 6.45am, we got kicked off 3 different premises all by the same security guard. We ended up shooting completely away from buildings and instead near the water, which was a lot more peaceful and attractive anyway -- the location also worked better with the garments.

It was a good morning to celebrate my birthday.

A NIGHT AT THE ROSE BAR

Dressed ‘to the nines’ on a Saturday evening two of my friends and I step through the heavy ornate doors of the Plaza Hotel, into an Art Deco palace. Fawn marble constructs the buildings interior, including the stairs that guide us up to the dimly lit Rose Bar, whilst a monstrous grand chandelier hovers above our heads. I feel like royalty when I am escorted to a softly padded leather stool at the deep chestnut bar top.

Whilst swigging a 'Blood and Sand', my friends and I chat loudly over the faint Jazz tunes, simultaneously devouring the assorted nuts on the tray near by, clearly reckless in our Australian approach. Lucky we look good.

What I’m captured by most is a bottle of whisky eyeballing me from across the room. I am not an alcoholic but in fact more so admirable of the miniature crystal stairs in which the liquor rests upon, including the locked transparent box that encloses this display. It must be expensive.

My eyes wonder to talking matured hands, scrupulously rolled shirt cuffs and finely tailored blazer sleeves, complimenting the slinky scarlet satin that cascades over painfully flawless legs. Her vibrant flashing eyes smile at the man perhaps three times her senior as he signs the bill, confirming their night has began.

I now feel uncertain if this experience is real or not, similarly to how Chris Brown feels in his film clip, ‘Gimme That’. It isn’t until I’m handing over a twenty and five for one measly drink that I realize it’s actual. At least it tasted good.

The vibration of a text message alarms me I should have been at another place thirty minutes ago, but like a magnet I’m compelled to the grand ambiance of this bar, better yet hotel or home for the certain privileged. Envy has never been a characteristic of mine until I see an elegant looking woman with her two plain daughters catching a lift to their residence.

It’s time I pull myself out of this pretentious unattainable dream and step back into the world of realism, a place of raw in which I understand. I at least used the memorable hour to cherry pick what I wanted to see that will now construct many ideas similar to a Surrealist Cubist artist, however mine in fabric form.

Possibly I’ll go back there one day and see a mistress bathed in my wine coloured silk satin, splashing through a historic hall into a private world I somewhat decide not to go, but instead allow a piece of my soul.

ARCHITECTURE ON THE FEMALE FORM

You may have heard of SANDRA BACKLUND, a female fashion designer from STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN. If you haven't heard, follow her lead. She creates one off custom made pieces.

I first saw Backlund's work in an Exhibition, The Endless Garment, at RMIT Gallery in Melbourne City, Australia. I have never been so blown away as I was when I saw her pieces. They are incredibly technically detailed, and so textured that the garment has to be mono-chromatic otherwise would spoil the design.

My goal is to own one of her pieces before I die.

And from her current collection...

I am particularly drawn to this image for a few reasons. Yes because the design is amazing, but more so from the image itself. The over exposure, the 70's wood Laminex, this model's look of uncertainty and elegance; gently leaning her body weight onto her frivolous arm.

I love it. It reminds me of the current Marc Jacobs campaigns which you've probably seen in September Bazaar and Vogue. Take a look...

It looks eerie to see three woman lying in the dirt, with a ghostly white complexion.

Belinda Ponczek is a Melbourne based stylist. She experiments with a whole range of clothing, from couture to experimental pieces, including young emerging designers. This fusion of many styles is what sets Ponczek apart from others.

A truly talented, organized and very fantastic person. I was lucky enough to have one of my pieces featured in her last photoshoot in Melbourne, just before we both left for NY.

This is the first fashion show of my own I have ever organized. I have been assistant for countless fashion shows, but doing my own was a completely different ball game...

I was super organized, but that wasn't enough... doing everything alone is vitually impossible.. you need other people to make it great! So the time has come that my 3rd year Sustainability class works will be showcased to Melbourne's public...

Our 3rd year Bachelor of Design (Fashion) RMIT Studio 5 class has collaborated with Swedish Boutique clothing Store Swensk to create mouth dropping garments.

The final products are amazing but it is the design process (seeing the before and after products) which is the mind boggling factor! You have to come along to the exhibition to know exactly what I am talking about...

Back to high school...

Today was such a good day for me. This morning started off with a speech to the VCE 3/4 Design and Technology class at my high school Star of the Sea in Brighton. I didn't realise how much I have grown physically and mentally sinse year 12 until I arrived with memories of being a student there. All of the students were so enthusiastic to listen to my journey sinse I graduated VCE in 2007. They had so many questions to ask and I was just as excited to answer. I feel so speacial I can be an inspiration as well as a mentour to some extent.

To top off the presentation my teacher (the teacher who taught me 3/4 Design and Technology) Sue Murphy gave me a beautiful card thanking me for coming to chat, and also a Myer gift voucher :) WOW I didn't expect that and I'm so greatful.

Thanks Star of the Sea for being such a great school and I wouldn't be where I am today without you.

3rd Year Studio 5 - Sustainability

Original dress 1 - before shot.

Dress 1 after shot (harrem pants) - Striped fabric was dyed and made into harrem pants. The seams have chains in them to weigh the fabric down.

Dress 1 and 2 made into a cape like jacket. The Bottom half is dress 2 re-designed, and the top neck piece detailing is the dyed fabric from dress 1. The neck section has a structured piece underneath to hold it up.

After many months of hat and accessory making... it finally all paid off

This work and more ill be presented in a cabinet at Melbournes GPO from August sometime until the end of 2010. The collection before being on display at GPO will be part of a fashion show through the salon Madamoiselle's, and will be published in a magazine (not sure which one yet though will keep you posted). 1ST YEAR - MORPHING LIQUID

This outfit is based on the idea of morphing liquid. All of the construction lines are fluid, including the fabrics colours represent the sand at the bottom of the ocean. An delicate silks were used to mimic flowing liquid.

1940'S GLAMOUR

1940-1950's - Post WWII. Woman's dress was influenced by the military uniform.
You will find the silhouette is very square.
The shoulders to arms fold at a 90 degree angle, making the female body look straight up and down with slight waist shaping.

(Above) As woman were working as nurses and so forth during the war, they had no time to do there hair, and it also had to be out of their faces. Wearing embellished netted headwear was the best way to achieve functional (for the war) and glamerous looking hair.

EL MONSTRO DEL MAR!

After attending the opening of the movie El Monstro Del Mar! I couldn't help but be influenced by the pin up style of the female actors. In saying that all the woman who also attended the opening looked fab in there 1950's rocker billy style outfits.

The outfit about was based on the Russian Ballet Tutu. A sentimental garment with images of the dances family and things she loves embellished onto the Tutu.

This work is based on the creation of a Moroccan inspired Jazz bar. A lot was researched in order to come to the end design.

Each piece was hand illustrated to design this huge Jazz bar.

Final advertisement. Not billboard like, but to be advertised in a street magazine, where people want to find exclusive places to chill out, listening to great live Jazz music.
Unfortunatley the wording on this work hasn't come out clear, but you get the idea.

HUSSEIN CHALAYAN - READINGS SS08 PARIS

This video always captures me - no matter how many times I watch it. It displays how such wearable garments can be executed/shown in an artistic way - like the moving camera installation. Hussein Chalayan was forced to make wearable garments, in order to make money to support his label, and ultimately to support his non-wearable artform garments.

The packaging for the lingerie was the most difficult. I made the box from scratch. As in this wood was a plank. It had to be measured correctly the power cut, including the indents for the lid to slide on and off.

Unfortunately this image is pixelated. This is the advertisment for the lingerie and packaging.

Here you can see the metalic bird on the top right of the singlet. This was a foil like material which is glued with fabric glue - great stuff, fabric glue!

Before I cut the fabric, I designed the print on computer, then I got the fabric block screen printed (just enough to make the lingerie once - as it's really expensive to screen print).

The text on the bum has been machine embroidered.

The fabric was purchased from Chapel Street Bazaar.
At this stage of my designing stage I was inspired by vampire style with a touch of 1950's feminine.

The chains were attached to hold the dress up around the nech and shoulders, and also firm around the body so it wouldn't slip around.

I also made a head piece and a black satin cape to add to the vampy look.
You'll catch on that I have an attraction to capes.

In this piece my love for costumes is evident which also stays strong in my body of work till present.

PAINTING A PRESENT

As I am a student, I am poor. Thus for my best friends 21st a decided I replace an expensive gift for one sentimental. The effort I put in was exhausting but I finally came to an end product/present... THANK the Lord!

It took me 3 hours of good scrubbing to get the spray paint off my hands... remember to wear gloves and a mask when spray stencil-ing.
